President Barack Obama urged Americans on this day of Thanksgiving to show compassion for Syrian refugees, referring to the days of the pilgrims.
"In 1620, a small group of pilgrims came to this continent, were refugees who had fled persecution and violence in their homeland," Obama said. "Almost 400 years later, we remember his part in the history of the United States and honour the men and women who helped them in their time of need," said the president.
Barack Obama announced a plan to allow into the country 10,000 refugees from Syria. The president's decision has drawn attention to this problem that has intensified in the wake of the terrorist attacks in Paris earlier this month.
More than 30 state leaders have expressed their dissatisfaction with this initiative. Several politicians have also considered that refugees are a security risk.
In his Thanksgiving, Barack Obama also said: "What makes America America is that we offer that opportunity. We offer in light of the Statue of Liberty to the world, and expand our circle to say that all the children of God are worthy of our compassion and care. That's part of what makes this country the greatest country in the world. "
