The hidden film in 'Madame Web' that they did not dare to show us

Spider-Man 's alternate universe is not moving forward on the right foot. After the success of Venom and its sequel, the continuity of this saga about the villains of the spider superhero seems to be in limbo. First, because of the resounding failure that Morbius was last 2022, and, second, because history seems to repeat itself with Madame Web , the film starring Dakota Johnson about this character with clairvoyant powers.

The beginning of its commercial career has been identical to that of Jared Leto's film, with only 15% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, an average of 30/100 on Metacritic and with box office forecasts on the floor. That is, a total catastrophe. It is no wonder, because it seems that they have decided to turn a deaf ear to the problems that this franchise has had since the beginning and have not even tried to squeeze the potential that is hidden behind this story. In fact, watching Madame Web , one can realize that there is another film hidden between the lines that they have not dared to develop.

It once again follows the trail of classic superhero origin stories, with a character stuck in his monotonous routine who, overnight, finds himself with superpowers and facing a villain. It wouldn't be a problem if it contributed something new and made the character of Madame Web stand out, but there is no intention of leaving the comfort zone , which automatically places it as a very conventional product that you feel that you have seen countless times, very in the vein of failed superhero movies of the 2000s like Ben Affleck's Daredevil or Jennifer Gardner's Elektra .

Of course, much worse than those, because they do not even offer sequences that express the potential of their characters, they are simply in charge of making a presentation and anticipating the superheroic action for future sequels. On screen, we only see Dakota Johnson discover her powers and reunite the group made up of Julia Carpenter , Mattie Franklin and Anya Corazón , which, as readers of the comics will know, are the two spider-women and spider . -girl . Only Madame Web herself unleashes her abilities in the climax of the film, while the rest is completely wasted.

The spider-woman movie that has prevented us from enjoying

The point is that visions of hypothetical futures are introduced in between with these three spider women in powerful action sequences . Precisely, the images that they sold us in the trailers with them dressed in their superhero costumes. However, these are moments of just a few seconds that are not part of the main plot of Madame Web .

Throughout the film, you hope that these sequences will be expressed at some point, especially considering that Sydney Sweeney , Celeste O'Connor or Isabela Merced exude charisma playing these three young women who accompany Dakota Johnson. But, as I say, there is none of this here, because we simply find low-budget action sequences while everything is left in the air for future films that, considering the stumble with which this first one began, it seems difficult for us to see .

Personally, I think that what we are anticipated and finally deprived of seeing was just what we asked Madame Web when we approached the cinema , not the kind of pilot for a failed television series that it ends up being. I understand that Sony Pictures, the studio behind Spider-Man, has been afraid to take risks and jump in with characters not so well known to the public, but I don't see the point in making a film like that if you don't trust the material at first. that you have in your hands.

To be honest, I didn't find Madame Web as bad as Morbius or Venom . For all this I say, I feel that there is hidden in it a very good film with great ingredients to conquer us. All of its footage kept me entertained, wanting to know more about these four protagonists and see the Spider-Women in action , imagining the many possibilities that are on the screen and how much this franchise could give if they dared to go one step further.
