Amazon founder Jeff Bezos said on Thursday he was moving from Seattle to Miami , his hometown, to be close to his parents and the operations of his space company Blue Origin in Cape Canaveral.
"As exciting as the move is, it is a difficult decision for me. Seattle, you will always have a piece of my heart ," the billionaire said in an Instagram message on Thursday.
The message included a video of Bezos at Amazon's first office in Seattle, where he founded the e-commerce company in his garage in 1994 and built it into one of the world's largest retail groups.
Private space company Blue Origin's operations are increasingly moving to Cape Canaveral, Bezos added.
Amazon's rapid growth transformed Seattle's South Lake Union district, replacing warehouses and parking lots with office towers, high-paid tech workers and expensive restaurants . The growth contributed to an economic boom and rising rents.
Bezos bought a second property in Miami, for $79 million, last October, on the exclusive Indian Creek Island, known as the "Billionaire's Bunker", in Miami Beach, in Biscayne Bay. .
