Since her debut in the Star Wars universe as Cara Dune in the Disney+ series, The Mandalorian (90%) , Gina Carano has been the focus of intense debates and conflicting opinions. Her portrayal of the former Rebel Alliance soldier, known for her strength and determination, drew both praise and criticism, and her presence in the series was the focus of passionate debates among fans.
Who was Cara Dune and why was Gina Carano fired from Star Wars?
Some fans praised her portrayal of Dune, appreciating her role as a strong and empowered female figure in the Star Wars universe. Her presence in the series was seen as a positive step towards the representation of powerful female characters in film and television, an aspect that was welcomed by audiences who long to see diversity in leading roles.
But controversy also arose because of Carano's political opinions and controversial statements on social networks. This created division among the show's fans, some of whom expressed distaste for the actress' opinions and called for her departure from the series. This polarization led to intense online debates and ended with the actress being fired from the Star Wars series. It was then learned that prior to this scandal, Carano was going to lead the planned Rangers of the Old Republic spin-off
His firing came amid the departure of countless Star Wars creatives under Kathleen Kennedy . Although Gina had kept a low profile after the events , she recently returned to the fray on failure and negative reaction to some of the latest Disney and Lucasfilm films.
The actress in her account said that surely after that video, Kennedy would press for the episode to be censored and try to hide the violent reaction:
This is the part where KK demands that any YouTuber be censored for sharing and laughing at this funny episode. It will cause YouTube to disable the approval option due to the responses it will receive..."
Carano also said that Kennedy has an "online mafia" that will do her bidding and share any message she wants before seemingly moving on to criticize recent woke culture and LGBTQIA+ representation:
She will activate her online crowd to highlight that the creators of South Park are racist, bigoted, transphobic, and demand that the South Park showrunners publicly apologize using only words she approves of.
The actress questioned the loyalty of some Kennedy fans who insult her and told them that they don't know how things are handled. For example, she reveals that she was asked to stop following accounts that had criticized the Lucasfilm boss:
For further context, not just for you but for the people reading, one of the things your overlords asked me to do was unfollow certain accounts because they "said bad things about Kathleen Kennedy." That was a big red flag for me. If you are a good leader, you learn to embrace and communicate, not dictate, silence and demand that your actors and directors stop following you and shaming more than half of your fan base and the people who have stuck with the franchise for decades. .
Carano argued that Kennedy's actions have reduced interest in "one of the most beloved franchises" of all time and even compared Lucasfilm to the Empire:
One of the problems their overlords have now is that they have made many people stop caring about one of the most beloved franchises in history, all through intimidation, pushing aggressive agendas, and trying to silence people who criticize them. How can they tell stories they don't understand when who they identify with is the Empire? They are literally trying to crush the little guys, the rebellion. It's no surprise that the narrative struggles.
She even claimed that Lucasfilm has "fired [and] dehumanized" people like her, who did nothing wrong:
They fired and dehumanized people like me who did absolutely nothing wrong, all to virtue signal people like you Yes Men. But Yes Men, unfortunately for you and them, do not drive the culture.
He went on to refer to Kennedy's "weak leadership" and noted how Disney needed to hire a new leader to make major changes:
They think people will forget and yes, maybe they will, but right now they have heard the voice of the people and it shook them. They are choosing to continue with their weak leadership that can't stand YouTubers saying bad things online. What they need is a real leader to step in, take the reins, take some responsibility, stop discriminating, apologize for things that have been done wrong, get out of politics completely, be truly inclusive and they would get back to business.
At the time of Gina Carano's firing in 2021, Kathleen Kennedy said she did not consider Disney to have any particular political orientation, but she was a "defendant of values."
Clearly, Carano had a pretty negative experience in her several years under Disney and Lucasfilm. She had previously claimed that Disney intimidated her by firing her from the Star Wars galaxy because of her comments.
Since then, both the New Republic Rangers and Cara Dune herself have, unfortunately, been scrapped. However, some fans have continued to speculate that she could eventually be recast with another actress. In 2022, Carano participated in two films, Terror on the Prairie and My Son Hunter .
