Tribute to Purple Rain: the incredible movie Rock Prince

Prince, died suddenly Thursday at the age of 57, was best known for his incredible musical talent, inventiveness and mystery. He tended to avoid interviews, preferring to let his music speak for itself. But he also left a movie deal with this task: Purple Rain , a kaleidoscopic musical that oscillates between dream and autobiography. His film has transformed the world of cinema, like its title had changed the world of music before.

The film released in 1984 is unsurprisingly one of film music's most surprising pop ever created, it is called Prince after all. The film takes place in his hometown of Minneapolis and includes many musicians with whom he worked at the time: Morris Day and his group The Time, Apollonia Kotero, guitarist Wendy Melvoin and keyboardist Lisa Coleman. Prince played the role of "The Kid", a very talented musician, romantic, eccentric and neurotic.

The past of Kid is tragic and violent and Clarence Williams III played the role of his father. The film evokes the desire, pain and ambition and Prince has unsurprisingly won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. The music of the album Purple Rain is the story as well as the film: especially the lyrical pain of When Doves Cry and Purple Rain to the madness of Let's Go Crazy .

Purple Rain is far from a realistic film: it is a work of extravagant expressionism which is based on the traditional setting of rock film (a talented youth and fashionable difficulty between pain and triumph) to express the ecstasy Prince, on top of his creative power and popularity. The film was a huge success, but no one can boast of having really understood, and can surely be said of Prince.
