'Euphoria' takes its time to return but faces a problem that would complicate its future

The third season of Euphoria isn't canceled, it's just taking its time. This was confirmed by HBO, denying a rumor that circulated on social networks last Monday, gaining so much strength that it became a trend. The good news is that the acclaimed drama series starring Zendaya is scheduled to return to the screens... but it is not known when.

“HBO and Sam Levinson remain committed to making an exceptional third season,” a spokesperson for the platform confirmed to Variety . “In the meantime, we are allowing our highly sought-after cast to pursue other opportunities.”

That is, the good news is that they intend to return us to the Euphoria universe with a third season that would be slowly in development. Sam Levinson and his team are working on writing the scripts but there doesn't seem to be any rush. Two years have passed since we saw the second season and, since then, the development of the third has been delayed due to the writers' strike and the death of Angus Cloud in July 2023, one of the actors in the cast who played a trafficker. drug addict and friend of the protagonist. However, as the company spokesperson points out, its main cast consisting of Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi and Hunter Schafer did not waste time and took advantage of the pause to continue expanding their careers until they became some of the most sought-after figures in Hollywood right now.

Therefore, as they develop scripts, the unstoppable rise of their stars could easily become the most difficult handicap to overcome when the time comes to get production underway.

The inevitable doubts

I think it's perfect that they're taking the time to develop the story. As it is a series with an exquisite and sharp narrative quality, awarded and applauded by critics, it is essential that they dedicate the time necessary to create a continuation that lives up to it. Pampering, caring for and expanding the universe created around Rue (Zendaya) with her internal demons from mourning and drug addiction, while continuing to take care of the narrative development of the rest of the young people around her, each with their problems, nuances, traumas. and personal challenges.

However, although they want to give hope with the news by denying any rumor of definitive cancellation, I fear that this slow and apparently unhurried development hides a drawback that could put its future completely in doubt . Because, how are they going to combine the agendas of their stars when the time comes if they are giving them free rein to continue exploring other projects, and just when they are being requested by the industry? Balancing the schedules of Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi and Hunter Schafer could turn into a logistical nightmare that could only delay production that much further.

Right now, Zendaya is at the top of the box office with Dune: Part 2  while she has the imminent release of Defiants  in the pipeline. This is the new film by Luca Guadagnino ( Call Me by Your Name ) about a former tennis prodigy and the triangle she forms between her husband and his former best friend. A premiere that arrives on Amazon Prime Video at the end of April while we wait for news from Denis Villeneuve about the development of the third part of Duna , not counting the weeks of promotion, travel and international commitments that each premiere requires.

Sydney Sweeney is reaping the rewards of her efforts after being crowned the new princess of romantic comedies with the global success of With Everyone But You. The film co-starring Glen Powell not only swept the box office, becoming the first rom-com in half a decade to exceed $200 million in revenue, but now it is also gaining attention on platforms and once again standing strong alongside Inmaculada . Meanwhile, she continues to take steps through the launch of her own products, partnering with brands and finishes filming two other productions while rumors of a possible sequel to With Everyone But You circulate.

Jacob Elordi , for his part, has just positioned himself strongly as Hollywood's new male star through Saltburn  and Priscilla , while he continues to add projects to his agenda. From a war series ( The narrow road to the deep north) to several recently completed films to being the star of the new version of Frankenstein being prepared by Guillermo del Toro . At the same time, Hunter Schufer is also climbing positions, having worked in Yorgos Lanthimos' new production with Emma Stone after Poor Creatures, Kinds of Kindness, and accompanied Anne Hathaway in another of her new films ( Mother Mary ).

To all this we must add that each project serves as a new step to expose their talents, notoriety and success among the public, opening the doors to new productions, more promotional commitments and everything that comes with fame. Like the fact that they have been featured characters at 2023 film festivals, posing from gondolas in Venice or attending fashion events in the front row.

The other side of the coin

While the pause allows their stars to continue rising in Hollywood, other lesser-known actors in the cast, with fewer opportunities available in the industry, are forced to continue waiting while suffering hardships. As would be the case of Nika King , the actress who plays Leslie, Rue's mother in the series, who revealed in one of her comedy shows that she has not paid rent for six months.

“Please stop asking me about season three,” King asked in an Instagram post published on March 5 along with a video of one of his onstage monologues. In this clip she appears sharing with the audience that she does not know when the new episodes are going to be released because he has no idea despite being part of the team.

She then imitated eager fans asking her about the return of the series, assuring that she needs it even more. “I haven't paid rent in six months,” she said while she made fun of how busy her daughter is with her fiction. “Zendaya is at Paris Fashion Week. Come home, I need you. “Mommy needs you.”

And while the audience laughed, the actress assured: “They are laughing and I am serious.” King went further and shared that despite the success of Euphoria, she had not gotten any other work since the series went off the air. “I thought my career was on the rise after Euphoria. I thought it was good. But it doesn't work like that. I called Taraji P. Henson and he told me 'get used to it.'”

The future of Euphoria

In November 2023, HBO confirmed that it hoped to release the third season in 2025 but now, taking into account the freedom they give the cast while developing the scripts, who knows when that will be. However, the professional rise of its interpreters does not seem to be slowing down . Quite the opposite, making Euphoria 's return even more complicated when the time comes to find a perfect moment when everyone is available.

The longer they wait, the busier they're likely to be with their careers, the higher their cachet will be, and the more different their appearances will be. Because let's not forget that we are talking about a series that reviews the youth of its protagonists from their last years in high school.

“I hope it's soon,” Jacob Elordi said when Jimmy Fallon asked him if the third season will take place in the future due to the time elapsed. “Or they're going to have to do something Benjamin Button or similar with me. I'm going to have a sore back walking through the hallways,” he joked about the 26-year-old while the series doesn't quite get going.
