Fey, the Mexican who was almost 30 years ahead of Shakira

 Shakira boasted the simultaneous release of the album Las mujeres ya no Lloran  with four different covers for the physical vinyl material. And the ad evoked what Fey did in 1998 with The Color of Dreams .


For the public identified with music in English, this marketing concept is familiar. In 1999 the band Korn released the album Issues with four different designs for the CD. Previously, in 1994, Mötley Crüe released a studio album with the same name as the group, sold as a special edition with three different colors in its typography: red, orange and yellow.

Between Korn and Mötley Crüe, Fey catapulted her artistic projection among the Hispanic and Latino public with the promotion of The Color of Dreams through the fusion of two creative ideas: a variety of covers and various colors in its design. Two more concepts were added to this: manipulable third dimension and multi-image box (photos not repeated on the cover).

The final result was a CD in four versions with different images of the singer as the main attraction. In the photos you can see Fey dancing in the distance, dancing from the front, with half her body in a moving pose and her face. The colors chosen were green, red, yellow and blue.

The choice of colors was meticulous based on an analysis. The lyrics of the songs were studied to connect them with the life experience that the singer had had at that time after visiting places in the world in order to strengthen her inner peace. She turned to color psychology to match the sentiment of the verses with the spiritual transformation Fey was going through.

Yellow meant a message to eradicate prejudice and stop judging others. Blue was the energy that vibrated in her when she sang, which translated into a fusion of heaven and earth. Green was the search for peace and happiness. Red was a clear call to the importance of balance in life.

It was an ambitious album that was made up of 14 songs: Liquid Sky; The early morning, you and the radio; Neither you nor anyone; The foam of the days; Say it with flowers; Cinnamon; Comes back; He; Syrup; I don't have a boyfriend; The color of dreams; From heart to heart; flower of a day; lye .

At an audiovisual level, video clips were produced and made to promote the singles Ni tú ni Nadie, Díselo con flores, Cielo liquid and Canela . It was in the video for Díselo con flores where the complete symbolism of the album is represented; Fey appears with all four colors.

The commercial merchandising line included CD, LP and cassette formats. In the case of vinyl, the cover was not three-dimensional due to the material of the wrapper. For the sale of the cassette outside of Mexico, Ni tú ni Nadie en balada was added as a bonus track .

Currently CD, LP and cassette of The Color of Dreams are offered on sites focused on the sale of physical materials in Mexico, the United States, Chile, Argentina and Colombia. In Europe, Germany and Austria the cassette has been sold with a price of 338 pesos. The vinyl costs around 1,000 pesos.

He sold three million copies of The Color of Dreams . He obtained 20 gold records and five platinum records for record sales.

The album was a total transformation

The launch of four covers with four colors was accompanied by a renewal in Fey's image. The singer did not want to continue with the teenage look that characterized her before 1998. She considered that it was time to go one step further and mature along with her music.

He left behind the use of jeans, jackets and sneakers to dress in tight-fitting, more adult outfits and high platforms in his footwear. The spiritual work that she experienced at that time also led her to make a decision that in those years weighed on her, to tell the truth about her age .

From her artistic projection in 1995 to the success of The Color of Dreams, Fey and her record label had handled the information that she started music at the age of 17, but the reality is that she was 21. For commercial and marketing reasons they suggested lie.

"At Sony it was my first interview and they introduced me to someone and it started: 'Well Fey, at your young age, 17 years old,' and my face is: 'What, 17? I'm 21,'" she told Yordi Rosado. in 2021 regarding the topic.
