'Always the same day', the series for hopeless romantics that crushes Anne Hathaway's film

Netflix premieres one of the most emotional, deep and unmissable limited series in recent months

Laugh. Mistress. Cry. But, above all, he lives in the now. This would be the perfect slogan to summarize the message of Always the Same Day (One Day) , the new Netflix  series that with 14 episodes of less than half an hour each will conquer hopeless romantics with a love story rooted in time. I suspect that the title is familiar to the vast majority. On the one hand, because it is the adaptation of the bestseller by David Nicholls published in 2009, and because Hollywood adapted it in 2011 with a melodrama starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess . A film that was a true critical and box office failure that, furthermore, was buried in the cemetery of cinematic oblivion.

The good news is that the Netflix series crushes any misconception that that movie would have left us, doing justice to the story, the characters and, above all, giving viewers a series that deserves all our tears.

Always the Same Day tells the story of Emma (Ambika Mod) and Dexter (Leo Woodall), a story that begins on the day of their university graduation - July 15, 1988 - and that we revisit on each anniversary for 20 years. That is, each chapter is a different year but the same day on the calendar, allowing us to discover how their lives intertwine in different ways, learning, making mistakes and transforming the relationship over time.

However, as those who have read the book or seen the movie will remember, this is not a simple story of two friends succumbing to love. That is very seen and would be too predictable. On the other hand, Always the Same Day is a more rounded, absorbing and sentimental story about two soul mates who understand each other because they dedicate time beyond attraction, who give each other the space to live their lives while the connection that unites them waits patiently. its moment. It is a story where love and tragedy take place. An infallible provocateur of smiles and tears.

The big difference with Anne Hathaway's film

Nicholls triumphed with his novel 15 years ago by absorbing the reader with the structure. Starting each chapter was an exciting adventure, because we didn't know where we were going to find the protagonist duo the following year. Maybe the previous chapter left them in a good place or just the opposite. What would have happened a year later? Would they still be friends, would they be together or apart? Each chapter represented how unpredictable destiny can be. It was impossible to predict where this story would go and that made it a compelling romantic novel.

With this structure, the author managed to develop a deep character study, investigating the existential motivations and experiences that shaped them as individual beings but also as people united by an unbreakable bond. It was much more than a simple love story.

However, Anne Hathaway 's film , directed by the Danish Lone Scherfig (Teaching of Life ), failed miserably when trying to summarize such a rich and romantic plot in 108 minutes with two performers who were unable to convey the passionate chemistry that the characters had in each other. its pages. Let's say that Dexter and Emma were the previous version of Marianne and Connell (the lovers of the unforgettable series Normal People know what I'm talking about). In addition, they ignored details that were relevant to the original story. Like, for example, the extensive talk they have in the first episode and that defines what their next years will be like, but that was radically cut in the film.

Being a narrative that spanned 20 years, full of details, with rich characters and deep conversations, it was evident that the film would have a very difficult time living up to it. They tried to tell so much in such a short time that it ended up becoming a tedious work that lacked details, subtleties and extremely important arcs to reach the hearts of the public. All this added to Anne Hathaway's terrible accent as a girl from the British north (she mixed it with her American tone and a mixture that made no sense came out), a graceless adaptation and the rushed outcome of the shocking outcome, led to a project destined failure. However, in the series structure, it ultimately triumphs .

A six-hour romance that's worth it

Always the Same Day is made up of 14 episodes that, due to its short duration, mean that we can devour it in six and a half hours . At the same time, thanks to the curiosity caused by the concern of discovering where we will find them next year, it is crowned as a perfect option for the current marathon. In my experience, I couldn't let go of it, watching it non-stop until late in the morning.

Accompanied by a soundtrack that fits perfectly with the humor and tone of each moment, a plot that weaves its edges taking its time, pampering and caring for the story, and two actors with explosive chemistry, the series is summarized as one of the best literary adaptations of recent years.

An emotional and heartfelt proposal that invites us to forget Anne Hathaway's film as if it did not exist . Because this is the version that history deserves. A deep story about love, pain and growth that not only aims to discover the romance between the characters, but what happens next.

Emma and Dexter may be fictional characters but they represent human experiences that intrinsically connect us, feeling every emotion on the other side of the screen.

For those who are curious, the Same Day movie is available on Amazon Prime Video and Star+.
