Shakira's trial begins: how many years in prison could she face

This Monday, Shakira will be present at the Barcelona Court for the start of her trial for a alleged fraud of almost 14.5 million euros to the Spanish Treasury, for which he could face a sentence of up to eight years and two months in prison. The Colombian singer is required to appear in court at least on the first day of the trial, although she may choose to testify or decline. In this legal dispute, which is expected to last until Thursday, December 14, 117 people from her close circle were called to testify.

The 24th Latin Grammy gala, which took place in the Spanish city of Seville, was a success for Shakira, as she dazzled everyone from the stage when she performed “Acróstico”, single in which his two children participated. Furthermore, minutes later, he came out with the Argentine producer Bizarrap to sing the Music Sessions 53< a i=6>, dedicated to his ex-partner, Gerard Piqué. It was awarded as the Song of the Year and the Best Pop Song in the aforementioned award ceremony.

However, not everything is joy in the life of the 46-year-old Colombian singer, since the Barcelona Prosecutor's Office considers that she did not pay the taxes corresponding to income and assets during the periods 2012, 2013 and 2014, despite the fact that he lived in Spain for more than the 183 days stipulated by law. For this reason, Shakira must appear before the Court this Monday, for the start of her trial, in which she faces a request for a sentence of up to eight years and two months in prison.

According to the trial script, the singer is expected to testify on the first day. However, his defense may request that this be delayed, since it is usual for the accused's statement to be at the end, with the intention of replying to all the evidence that has been presented against him.

The court estimates that the trial will last 12 sessions spaced from Monday, November 20 to Thursday, December 14, in which 117 witnesses will be presented =2>, among which are different types of workers who cared for Shakira in Barcelona. The extensive list ranges from beauty centers, hairdressers, bars, hotels and restaurants, to your personal driver, gynecologist, Zumba teachers, fitness teachers and your stylist. Likewise, the neighbors of her home in Catalonia, doormen and maintenance workers will be present.

Everyone must answer questions from the defense and accusations from the Prosecutor's Office, the State Attorney's Office and that of the Generalitat. At Shakira's request, employees of Live Nation Spain are called to testify; the CEO of Sony Music in Latin America, Afo Verde, and the president of the company Amanda Ghost. So will his brother, Tonino Mebarak, his manager, his choreographer, his therapist, his producer and his ex-partner, the Argentine Antonio de la Rúa, with who had a relationship for years before meeting former soccer player Gerard Piqué.

Despite being about to live a few long days, in which her future will be defined, Shakira appeared carefree and enjoying Thursday's big night at the Latin Grammys, where she captured all the attention and became one of the main protagonists.
