Zach Roerig talked about Matt's connection to Mystic Falls in "The Vampire Diaries"

It seems Matt had a connection to Mystic Falls in a bigger way than he ever imagined!

Actor Zach Roerig spoke with TVGuide about the connection of his character and how it developed in the final episodes. "I think it's very interesting for Matt to look back on ... all those times when he felt like an outcast, maybe, or some kind of charity case by the Gilbert, who took care of him," he shared. "I think that's the reason you're so sure of what you're doing,"  Zach adds  . "Being a sheriff and continuing in this compulsion in which he has always felt this need to protect the population and do what was right and asks himself:" Why? Why are you doing this? "I think it's nice to be sure that eventually what you've been doing is for the right reasons."  Matt is going to play an important role in Cade's arrest: "He's very integral in the plans to kill Cade." And Matt also physically threatens Cade. He's still a force to be reckoned with, regardless of whether he's a being Human or not. "
