The actress, 41, visited the camp that has been improvised on the docks of Piraeus, where 4,000 refugees and migrants sleep in waiting rooms and tents. There he got to know the management of the situation by organizations such as UNHCR and talk to refugees of various nationalities, as a Syrian family tearfully told him his journey from the Turkish coast. He later moved to the reception center Eleonas in Athens, offering accommodation to 700 people. This visit comes a day after his trip as special envoy of UNHCR to Lebanon, on the fifth anniversary of the Syrian conflict, coinciding with the summit intends to approve an agreement between the European Union (EU) and Turkey for the return of refugees entering European territory illegally.

The trip Jolie seeks to "strengthen efforts at the deterioration of the situation" "We can not alleviate the problem through humanitarian aid shipments, if not through diplomacy and conflict resolution", did see the actress in Lebanon under a downpour and behind a desk littered with microphones in the middle of a quagmire. "I saw how desperate is the struggle for survival of these families" and urged European leaders to do "something more than simply protecting its borders or provide more help."

The next day Jolie was also received by Greek Prime Minister Tsipras, with whom he discussed the refugee crisis. "The situation is very difficult, especially in the northern border. I know you've visited the reception centers in Piraeus. The situation is better there" in the camp Idomeni, Tsipras said upon receipt.

The Prime Minister explained that organized reception centers are currently 30,000 people -a which number more than 10,000 in the makeshift camp Idomeni in Greco-Macedonian border. These are people who, he said, "have been trapped on the Greek mainland due to the actions of the countries in the Balkan route".

Jolie's trip seeks to "strengthen the efforts of UNHCR and the Greek Government to increase the emergency response to the deteriorating humanitarian situation," according to a press release of the High Commissioner. About 85% of refugees and asylum seekers who have arrived in Europe did throughout Greece since January 2015, according to UNHCR.
