Egypt inaugurates today the "New Suez Canal" a. 72 km long waterway was built in just one year.
It runs partly in parallel with the now almost 150 year old Suez Canal, which connects the Red Sea and the Mediterranean together. Partially the old, extremely important for world trade channel was widened and deepened.
The "New Suez Canal" is a prestige object for President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who can celebrate the inauguration in Ismailia, among others, with a fleet parade. As guest of honor France's President Francois Hollande is loaded, other foreign heads of state are expected.
Egypt hopes that the "new Suez Canal," a boost for the economy. For the country, the charges for transit are a major source of income.
